Guy Penrod Visits Lee University: We visited Lee University today with some of our kids. And stopped in for one of the rehearsals of The Voices of Lee, directed by my good friend Danny Murray. What an awesome bunch of kids and a great school.

A Day of Music, Friendship, and Inspiration

It was more than a simple campus visit — it was a meeting of hearts, voices, and legacy. Gospel favorite Guy Penrod, known for his powerful baritone voice and warm stage presence, recently spent the day at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, alongside some of his children. What unfolded was a moment of encouragement and inspiration, both for the students he met and for the celebrated singer himself.

Lee University has long been a hub for Christian education and musical excellence, and at the center of its artistic heartbeat is The Voices of Lee, the university’s premier vocal ensemble. Directed by the much-loved and highly respected Danny Murray, the group has gained national attention for its skill, precision, and heartfelt performances.

When Penrod and his family arrived, they had the opportunity to sit in on one of the ensemble’s rehearsals. For a man who has spent decades lifting gospel music to audiences around the world — from his years with the Gaither Vocal Band to his solo ministry — the experience was profoundly meaningful.

“What an awesome bunch of kids and a great school,” Penrod said afterward, reflecting with admiration on both the students’ talent and the atmosphere of dedication they created in the rehearsal hall.

But for Penrod, the visit wasn’t just about music. It was also about friendship and faith. Danny Murray, who has directed The Voices of Lee since its inception in 1994, is a longtime friend of Penrod’s. The bond between the two men — one a mentor shaping the next generation, the other a voice that has inspired countless believers — made the gathering feel like a family reunion of sorts, one grounded in a shared love of music and ministry.

Throughout his career, Penrod has been known not only for his signature voice but also for his heart for people. His words to the students at Lee carried that same sincerity. He offered them encouragement, reminding them that their music carries purpose far beyond performance.

“Blessings to you all, keep singing,” he said with a smile — a simple phrase, yet one that carried weight. Coming from someone who has lived his life testifying through song, it was both a charge and a benediction.

The visit underscored something that has always been central to Penrod’s message: music is not just about applause or recognition. It is about faith, family, and the lasting connections that are made when hearts are lifted together in song.

For The Voices of Lee, having someone like Guy Penrod step into their rehearsal space was a reminder that the path they are walking is one that others have faithfully walked before them. For Penrod, seeing a new generation of young singers committed to excellence was proof that the future of gospel music is alive and strong.

As the rehearsal came to a close, there was no stage, no spotlight, no roaring crowd — only the beauty of voices raised in harmony and the quiet encouragement of a man who has lived what he preaches.

It was a day at Lee University that will be remembered not simply as a visit, but as a shared moment of inspiration — a bridge between generations, carrying forward the eternal truth that music has always been more than notes on a page. It is worship, testimony, and community.

And as Penrod’s parting words echoed — “keep singing” — they became more than advice. They became a call to carry on the song.
